Third grade is what educators call the "third grade wall." It is the year when academic expectations shift dramatically. Third grade is also when children develop metacognitive skills about spelling. They start to ask themselves, "Does that look right?" and can learn to use spelling strategies like breaking words into syllables, looking for familiar patterns, and using word origins as clues.
